Classic China with Zhangjiajie in 12 Days
Beijing -> Xi鈥檃n -> Zhangjiajie -> Shanghai
A first-China route with one protected mountain chapter, not a rushed scenic checkbox.

Use this route when Zhangjiajie is the visual reason for extending the classic China trip.

Day by day, as this first-time China route actually works.
The route below keeps the classic spine intact. Confirm arrival timing, rail station transfers, walking load, and whether any extra city still leaves enough room for the route to feel calm.
Beijing arrival. Check in and keep the evening near the hotel / Qianmen / Wangfujing depending on location. Jet lag matters because this route later has mountain walking.
Beijing imperial core. Visit Tiananmen Square area if needed, then Forbidden City, Jingshan for the roofline view, and one hutong / Shichahai layer if energy allows. Do not add Summer Palace on top of this walking day.
Great Wall day. Use Mutianyu or another stable Great Wall section, then return to Beijing. Add Olympic Park exterior or a simple dinner only if the group still feels good; do not schedule an evening train after the Wall.
Beijing to Xi鈥檃n. Transfer by high-speed rail or flight, check in, then use Xi鈥檃n City Wall, Bell Tower / Drum Tower, or Muslim Quarter / Sajinqiao food streets as a light first evening.
Xi鈥檃n anchor. Terracotta Warriors in the morning / midday, optional Huaqing Palace only if timing and interest fit, then return for City Wall / Big Wild Goose Pagoda area / food street. This is the Qin-history day, not a second transfer day.
Xi鈥檃n to Zhangjiajie. Fly or rail according to schedule and keep arrival simple. Choose Wulingyuan base if the next two days focus on the forest park; choose Zhangjiajie city if Tianmen / airport logic is more important.
Wulingyuan National Forest Park main day. Prioritize Yuanjiajie / Avatar pillars, Tianzi Mountain, Bailong Elevator or cableway routing by queues and weather. This is the first must-keep Zhangjiajie day.
Second park day or weather repair. Use Golden Whip Stream and Ten-mile Gallery for lower walking load, or revisit higher platforms if D7 was foggy. Do not add Fenghuang before the park core is protected.
Tianmen Mountain. Use cableway / Tianmen Cave / glass walkway by weather, height comfort, and flight timing. If Tianmen is fogged in, use this as the route buffer rather than forcing a poor-value visit.
Zhangjiajie to Shanghai. Transfer and keep the Shanghai evening light: Bund walk, river-view dinner, or hotel recovery. Do not add Suzhou or Hangzhou after a mountain transfer.
Shanghai finish. Yu Garden / old city, Bund, Pudong skyline, Shanghai Museum, or Former French Concession by energy. Keep this flexible after the Zhangjiajie walking load.
Depart Shanghai. Add only a nearby breakfast / short walk if flight time allows.

More dramatic than Guilin, but less forgiving.
Confirm everyone accepts mountain walking, queues, weather risk, and the extra transfer load.

Would the group remove a city to protect Zhangjiajie properly?
Is everyone comfortable with mountain walking, queues, and weather risk?
Would Guilin be a better softer-scenery substitute?
